Historically, long-term ecological conservation of land was the purview of governments, and existed only on public lands such as parks. New and emerging tools for private land conservation, such as the conservation easement, have changed that, and the possibilities are only beginning to surface.
In the last decade, there has been an explosion of local land conservation groups, called ‘Land Trusts,’ around the continent. The movement is building in Alberta, with several organizations up and running, and many others looking at establishing.
